#Malepolish: Men get into nail polish

More and more men are posting manicured nails on Instagram. Spotlight on this amazing trend that makes brands happy.

The growing popularity of hasthag #malepolish on Instagram is destabilizing. The photos that accompany it are just as surprising: many men display their impeccably colored nails. And if some wear traditional manicures, others are more daring: they dare the French manicure, the two-tone manicure, geometric or nail art. The profiles of these men? Diverse and varied. Young and mature. Extravagant as classics. Manly as effeminate. Light on this social phenomenon that reflects a growing interest of men for beauty (and vice versa).

NAIL POLISH FOR MEN: THEY FALL FOR THE “MAN-UCURE”

An atypical man hides behind this bold trend: Marc Jacobs. In March 2016, the fashion designer had the idea to publish a portrait of him, a cigarette stuck between two manicured fingers via the hashtag #malepolish (inspired by the #nailpolish). This fashion figure, adept at puns, ends up nicknaming this male manicure “man-ucure”. His photo intrigues and baffles Internet users: more than 8000 likes and many mixed reactions.

Then, little by little, this idea seduced and other famous men tried the “man-ucure”: Marilyn Manson, Jared Leto or Snoop Dog. The latter even tries the two-tone manicure. The rapper told the Daily Mail:“I’m fascinated by what you can do with your nails.” A fascination that will even push him to launch a collection of mixed varnishes in 2014.

WHAT DOES THE CRAZE OF MEN FOR NAIL POLISH MEAN?

To date, the hashtag #malepolish has been shared more than 1200 times. Why such a success? Simply because men are more interested in the world of beauty (hairstyle, beard, perfumes, makeup etc.). This enthusiasm is palpable on Instagram but also YouTube. Men are introduced to beauty tutorials with ease, a beauty culture and sometimes even a disconcerting makeup technique.

MALE BEAUTY? A GROWING AND FLOURISHING BUSINESS

Cosmetics brands have grasped the interest (still timid but very real) of men for nail polish. So much so that in 2011 the beauty brand Alpha Nail did not hesitate to launch a range of nail polish for men. His muse? Spanish boxer Nicolas Gonzalez. The message is crystal clear: all men can wear nail polish.

Undoubtedly, male beauty has been experiencing a return to grace in the beauty industry in recent years. #Malepolish is one of the proofs of this certain evolution.

We recommend that you use the adequate manicure and pedicure set to take care of your nails: file them, polish them, apply a base.
